bayer & bauhaus: how design shaped aspen

    Aspen Historical Society

    Location: Wheeler/Stallard Museum Times: 11:00 am - 5:00 pm

The exhibit is open Tuesday – Saturday, 11:00AM – 5:00PM.  Please note the exhibit will be closed on Thursday, July 4th.

Aspen Historical Society presents “bayer & bauhaus: how design shaped aspen” opening December 4th as part of Bauhaus 100: Aspen, a community-wide celebration of the centenary of the German art school Bauhaus. This new exhibit delves into the profound, but often unnoticed, influence of Herbert Bayer’s work on Aspen, Colorado. Following his arrival in 1945, Bayer’s Bauhaus ethos and artistic vision began to shape the modern aesthetic and way of life in the Aspen community. He pioneered historic preservation in the area, designed a Bauhaus-inspired campus at the Aspen Institute, influenced local architecture, built innovative earthworks, and helped guide the community’s cultural and philosophic values. Aspen Historical Society’s never-before-exhibited Bayer collection offers a unique view into his extensive works, both fine art and commercial. The exhibit will share a glimpse into Bayer’s lasting influence through preliminary sketches, original prints, textiles, architectural drawings, graphic design works, historical photographs, and more.

Tickets: $10 adult/$8 senior/free for children under 18 and active military personnel (free on the first Saturday of each month as well as Saturday, January 12th for Winterskol).

Great Ideas of Bauhaus: Print Exhibition Opening Reception

Red Brick Center for the Arts

Location: Red Brick Center for the Arts Times: 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Red Brick Center for the Arts is excited to join the Roaring Fork Valley in the international celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus.

In 2019, numerous local organizations will collaborate on events to commemorate this modernist art school, honor its impact on Aspen and reignite the creative power that began a century ago

The Red Brick Center for the Arts will feature an exhibition of posters made by artists working in the printmaking medium. The format of the exhibit will take its inspiration from the Great Ideas of Western Man, an advertising campaign for Walter Paepcke’s Container Corporation, in which artists created an ad representing a quote from famous literary works.

To reexamine the idea of the Bauhaus in a format that pays tribute to Paepcke’s vision, the Red Brick Center for the Arts will invite artists to select a quote that exemplifies Bauhaus theories and beliefs and create a visual representation of the ideas.
